Marking the 2024 reopening of the Mark Taper Forum and the 20th anniversary of Green Day's iconic album, this groundbreaking collaboration between Center Theatre Group and Deaf West Theatre used animated text captions not a purely remedial means for accessibility, but as a creative celebration of deaf identity in America today.
This complex technical production used hologram fabrics, tracked projection mapping on automated panels, four live video inputs, and an array of six projectors, all while operating on multiple show control protocols, including OSC, SMTPE, and traditional called cues.

"Putting most subtitles to shame, the captions in this 'American Idiot,' prominently and clearly displayed at every performance, are packed with visual flair reflecting the tones of the songs. Words literally shake with intensity. Typefaces get wild. Projected letters stretch and drip down the set as characters get high." - The New York Times
"And chances are, you have never seen subtitles rendered as dazzlingly as what projection designer David Murakami is doing on the Taper stage. Don’t know all the words to the songs on Green Day’s 2004 album? Wait till you check out the way Murakami presents them." - BroadwayWorld
