Created by Opera Omaha in collaboration with the Omaha Symphony, this 2026 presentation of Bartók’s one-act psychological thriller transformed the Holland Performing Arts Center into Bluebeard’s world of locked rooms, dread, and revelation. Conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya and starring Michelle DeYoung and Ryan McKinny, the production played April 24 and 25, 2026.
Created for a symphony hall rather than a traditional opera stage, my projection design used immersive imagery, light, and shadow to recast the Holland Center itself as the castle. Instead of trying to literalize every moment, the media environment layered shadow imagery and atmospheric visual design around the singers and full orchestra, deepening the work’s psychological descent while allowing Bartók’s score to remain the primary dramatic engine.
