Syracuse Stage’s 2024 holiday production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella drew from the beloved 1997 television adaptation starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, presenting the familiar fairytale through a warm, contemporary storybook lens. Co-produced with the Syracuse University Department of Drama, the production centered Cinderella’s kindness, agency, and courage to imagine a different future for herself.
The projection design extended Kimberly Powers’s dimensional scenery with illustrated landscapes, distant castles, atmospheric skies, and moments of animated magic. Projection was also integrated directly into the production’s stagecraft: during Cinderella’s onstage transformation, swirling imagery covered a mirrored scenic surface while she changed from her pink dress into the blue ball gown, emerging only ten seconds later.
