Michael Christie's two hour reduction of the entire Ring Cycle proved to be my greatest challenge yet, relying on projections to help condense the mythic enormity of Der Ring des Nibelungen into a single night. Using a minimalist approach for maximum effect, our "Journey to Valhalla" featured only three screens which expanded and contracted the space to help illustrate the action. Arthur Rackham's classic illustrations were dissected and animated to keep the visual palette simple, yet striking. Additionally, the project provided me with a chance to work with not only photos, but prose, carefully composing the interstitial text to help guide the audience through the 85% of the opera that was cut.
