Little Prince
May 2015 Media/Projection Designer Created in close collaboration with illustrator Matt Kish, Rachel Portman's Little Prince blended together traditional sets and costumes with rich and vibrant interactive projected environments, based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. "How utterly charming! From its opening notes, this year’s operatic offering from UC Santa Cruz transported us to another world peopled with characters in delightfully creative costumes, amidst a lighting extravaganza last Friday... Fascinating interactive projections designed by David Murakami, a recent UCSC film graduate and current graduate student in Theater Arts. The resultant light show was exciting, and so befitting the interplanetary experience! Especially noteworthy was the sequence of Water’s dress unfolding and forming a gently fluid projection screen. Yes, some audience members may have had a sudden throwback to 1960s psychedelia, but in the words of the opera, ”Eyes are blind. Look only with the heart.” - Santa Cruz Sentinel
